As temperatures drop and respiratory viruses begin circulating more widely, fall and winter can require a little extra planning for people who are immunocompromised.

A weakened immune system can make it harder for the body to fight certain infections and may increase the risk of serious illness. But being immunocompromised doesn’t mean you have to spend the entire season worried about getting sick.

At Cushing Family Pharmacy, we want our patients and their families to feel prepared. Prevention matters, but so does knowing what precautions make sense for you, and having a plan if you do become sick.

1. Stay Up to Date on Recommended Vaccines

Vaccination is one of the most important tools available to help protect against serious respiratory illness.

People who are moderately or severely immunocompromised may have different vaccination recommendations based on their age, health conditions, medications, previous vaccinations, and other factors.

Your healthcare provider or pharmacist can help you determine which vaccines are appropriate for you. These may include:

Annual flu vaccine

COVID-19 vaccine

RSV vaccine

Pneumococcal vaccine

Shingles vaccine

For most adults, September and October are generally good times to receive the annual flu vaccine, although getting vaccinated later can still be beneficial while influenza viruses are circulating.

Your vaccine schedule may look different from someone else’s, so ask rather than assume.

2. Some Vaccines Require Special Consideration

If you’re immunocompromised, it’s especially important to tell your pharmacist or healthcare provider about your medical conditions and medications before receiving a vaccine.

Certain live vaccines may not be appropriate for people with some types of immunocompromise. For example, the live attenuated influenza vaccine given as a nasal spray is not recommended for people with weakened immune systems.

That doesn’t mean you should automatically avoid vaccines. The appropriate vaccine, and sometimes its timing, can depend on your condition, medications, treatments, and degree of immune suppression.

Your family members should generally stay up to date on their recommended vaccinations as well. If you have questions about vaccines for yourself or someone in your household, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

3. Make Hand Hygiene Part of Your Routine

Simple everyday habits can help reduce your exposure to germs throughout respiratory virus season.

Make a habit of:

Washing your hands regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds

Washing your hands before eating or preparing food

Avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands

Keeping hand sanitizer available when soap and water aren’t convenient

Avoiding sharing drinks, utensils, and other personal items

Because many respiratory viruses spread through the air, ventilation matters too. When practical, opening windows, improving airflow, or choosing outdoor activities instead of crowded indoor spaces may help reduce exposure.

4. Be Thoughtful About Crowds and Sick Contacts

When respiratory viruses are circulating heavily, you may want to take additional precautions in crowded or poorly ventilated indoor spaces.

A well-fitting, high-quality mask can provide an additional layer of protection, particularly in crowded indoor settings.

It’s also a good idea to avoid close contact with people who are sick. If someone has a cough, fever, sore throat, congestion, or other symptoms, or simply isn’t feeling well, giving yourself some extra distance can be worthwhile.

And don’t be afraid to communicate your needs.

Protecting your health may sometimes mean skipping a gathering, wearing a mask, or asking a sick friend or family member to visit another time.

5. Support Your Overall Health

Healthy habits won’t replace vaccines or medical treatment, but they remain an important part of taking care of yourself.

Eat a Balanced Diet

Try to include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and other nutrient-rich foods. A balanced diet provides nutrients your body needs to function properly.

Prioritize Sleep

Most adults generally need about 7–9 hours of sleep per night, although individual needs vary. A consistent sleep schedule can help support your overall health and well-being.

Manage Stress

Fall and winter can get busy. Make time for activities that help you unwind, whether that’s reading, listening to music, spending time outdoors, enjoying a hobby, or visiting with family and friends.

Be Careful With Supplements

Before adding an “immune support” vitamin, supplement, or herbal product, ask your pharmacist.

Supplements can interact with medications, and certain products may not be appropriate with some medical conditions or treatments. “Natural” doesn’t automatically mean safe for everyone.

6. If You Get Sick, Don’t Wait Too Long to Call

This is especially important for someone who is immunocompromised.

If you develop symptoms of flu, COVID-19, or another respiratory illness, contact your healthcare provider promptly.

Testing and treatment may be appropriate, and some antiviral medications work best when they’re started soon after symptoms begin.

Don’t assume you need to wait several days to see if you get better.

Your healthcare provider can help determine whether you need testing, treatment, or additional medical care based on your symptoms and individual risk factors.

Seek emergency medical attention for severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, persistent chest pain or pressure, new confusion, inability to stay awake, or other symptoms that concern you.

7. Make a Plan Before You Need It

One of the best things you can do this fall is have a plan before you become sick.

Know:

Who you’ll call if symptoms begin

Where you can get flu or COVID-19 testing

Which medications you’re currently taking

Which medications affect your immune system

Which OTC medications are safe with your prescriptions

Whether you’re up to date on recommended vaccines

Whether you have enough of your regular medications on hand

The middle of a fever isn’t the best time to figure all of this out.

A little preparation now can make things much easier if illness does make its way into your household.

Your Health Is Worth the Extra Protection

Being immunocompromised doesn’t mean you have to spend the entire fall and winter worried about getting sick. It means knowing your risks, taking reasonable precautions, and having a plan if you do become sick.

At Cushing Family Pharmacy, we’re here to help you understand your medications, review your vaccination needs, and answer questions about OTC medications and supplements throughout respiratory virus season.

Stop by or give us a call. A little preparation now can make respiratory virus season easier to navigate.

Flu season comes around every year, which means we hear a familiar question at the pharmacy:

“Do I really need to get another flu shot this year?”

For most people, the answer is yes.

At Cushing Family Pharmacy, annual flu vaccination is one of the simplest preventive health steps we recommend each fall. The flu vaccine can reduce your risk of influenza and serious complications and reducing your chances of getting sick may also help reduce opportunities for the virus to spread to the people around you.

Here’s why getting vaccinated each year matters.

Lower Your Risk of Flu and Serious Illness

No vaccine can guarantee that you won’t get sick. Flu viruses change, and vaccine effectiveness can vary from season to season.

However, getting vaccinated can reduce your risk of getting influenza. And if you do get the flu after vaccination, being vaccinated may reduce your risk of severe illness and serious complications.

That’s important because influenza isn’t always just a few miserable days at home.

Help Reduce Your Risk of Hospitalization

For some people, influenza can become serious enough to require medical care or hospitalization.

Flu vaccination has been associated with a lower risk of flu-related hospitalization and severe outcomes, making vaccination particularly important for people who have a greater risk of complications.

Those at increased risk can include:

Young children

Adults age 65 and older

Pregnant women

People with weakened immune systems

People with certain chronic health conditions

Even healthy people can develop influenza and experience complications, which is one reason flu vaccination is recommended so broadly.

Flu Can Be Especially Hard on People With Chronic Conditions

If you’re living with a chronic health condition, preventing influenza, or reducing your likelihood of severe illness, can be especially important.

The flu can sometimes worsen existing health problems, including conditions such as:

Asthma

COPD

Diabetes

Heart disease

If you’re unsure whether one of your medical conditions puts you at greater risk from influenza, ask your pharmacist or healthcare provider.

That’s also a good opportunity to make sure you’re up to date on other vaccines that may be recommended based on your age and health history.

Protecting Yourself Can Help Protect Others

Getting vaccinated is primarily about protecting your own health, but the benefits don’t necessarily stop with you.

Reducing your chances of getting influenza can also reduce opportunities for the virus to spread to other people.

That can be especially important when you’re around people who may be more vulnerable to serious illness, including older adults, young children, people with weakened immune systems, and people with certain chronic health conditions.

Getting your flu shot is one small step you can take for yourself and your community.

Why Do I Need a Flu Shot Every Year?

If you received a flu shot last year, you may wonder why you need another one.

There are two major reasons.

First, flu viruses change over time. Flu vaccines are reviewed each year and updated as needed based on the influenza viruses expected to circulate.

Second, protection from vaccination decreases over time.

That’s why flu vaccination isn’t considered a one-and-done vaccine. It’s recommended each flu season.

Who Should Get a Flu Shot?

Annual flu vaccination is recommended for nearly everyone 6 months of age and older, with rare exceptions.

The specific vaccine that’s appropriate for you can depend on factors such as your:

Age

Health history

Pregnancy status

Previous reactions to vaccines

Other individual health considerations

Adults age 65 and older, for example, have certain flu vaccine options that are preferentially recommended for their age group.

Not sure which flu vaccine is right for you? Ask us. Our pharmacy team can help answer your questions.

Can the Flu Shot Give Me the Flu?

No. A flu shot cannot give you influenza.

Some people may experience temporary soreness where the vaccine was given, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, or a low-grade fever afterward. These effects are generally mild and short lived.

It’s also important to remember that protection isn’t immediate. It typically takes about two weeks after vaccination for your body to develop its immune response.

When Should I Get My Flu Shot?

For most adults, September and October are generally good times to receive a flu vaccine.

But if those months have already passed and you haven’t been vaccinated, don’t assume it’s too late. Vaccination can still provide benefits later in the season while influenza viruses are circulating.

The important thing is not to wait until flu is already spreading through your family, workplace, school, or community before thinking about getting vaccinated.

Get Ready for Flu Season at Cushing Family Pharmacy

Flu season comes around every year. Fortunately, so does one of the simplest things you can do to prepare for it.

If you’re due for your annual flu shot, stop by Cushing Family Pharmacy. And if you have questions about the vaccine, your health conditions, medications, or which flu vaccine is appropriate for you, talk with one of our pharmacists.

We’ll help you get ready for flu season before flu season gets to you.

This article is for general educational purposes and is not a substitute for individualized medical advice. Talk with your pharmacist, physician, or other healthcare professional about vaccination recommendations specific to you.

Have you ever picked up your prescription, looked at the pills, and thought:

“Wait… this doesn’t look like my medication.”

You’re definitely not the first person to ask.

If your prescription looks different from last month, don’t be alarmed. There are several perfectly normal reasons the appearance of a medication can change from one refill to the next.

But there’s also an important rule we want our patients to remember:

If your medication looks different and you weren’t expecting a change, ask us before taking it.

Different Manufacturers Can Make the Same Medication

One of the most common reasons a prescription looks different is that the pharmacy has changed generic manufacturers.

Pharmacies purchase medications from different manufacturers, and the product we’ve been using may occasionally become unavailable or go on back order. Pharmacies may also change manufacturers because of changes involving wholesalers, purchasing contracts, availability, or cost.

When that happens, we may dispense the same prescribed medication and strength from a different manufacturer.

If we’ve changed generic manufacturers, the medication can have the same active ingredient, strength, dosage form, and intended use even though the tablet or capsule itself looks noticeably different.

Why Can the Pill Look So Different?

FDA-approved generic medications are required to have the same active ingredient, strength, dosage form, and route of administration as their brand-name counterparts. They must also meet FDA requirements for quality and demonstrate bioequivalence.

What doesn’t have to be identical is what the pill looks like.

Depending on the manufacturer, the same medication may differ in:

Color

Size

Shape

Markings or imprints

Coating or overall appearance

Manufacturers may also use different inactive ingredients.

So, the small white tablet you received last month could potentially be a different color or shape this month even though you’re still receiving the same active medication and strength.

If you have a known allergy or sensitivity to an inactive ingredient, be sure to let your pharmacist know.

How Can You Tell What the Pill Is?

Don’t rely on color or shape alone.

Tablets and capsules typically have identifying markings, such as letters, numbers, or symbols. Your pharmacist can use this information along with your prescription record and the medication’s packaging to verify what you’ve received.

While online pill-identification tools are available, a picture on the internet shouldn’t replace asking your pharmacist when something doesn’t look right.

If you’re looking at your prescription and thinking, “I’ve never seen this pill before,” give us a call.

We’ll be happy to check it.

Sometimes the Prescription Really Did Change

A different-looking pill doesn’t always mean the pharmacy changed manufacturers.

Your healthcare provider may have changed your medication, strength, dosage form, or directions. There may also be another reason your prescription looks different from what you’re accustomed to taking.

That’s why it’s important to check the prescription label rather than automatically assuming the change is cosmetic.

If something looks unexpected, check with us before taking your next dose.

It only takes a few minutes for us to review the prescription and help determine why your medication looks different.

It’s Always Okay to Ask Questions

We understand that seeing an unfamiliar pill in your prescription bottle can be concerning.

You should never feel embarrassed or uncomfortable asking us about it.

In fact, you are never bothering us by asking.

We’d much rather take a minute to verify your medication than have you go home wondering whether you’re taking the right thing.

Bring the medication to the counter, show it to us when you pick up your prescription, or give us a call. Our pharmacists can review your prescription and explain what changed.

When in Doubt, Ask Us

At Cushing Family Pharmacy, we’re here to answer your questions and make sure you understand your medications, not just fill them.

So if your medication looks different this month, don’t guess, and don’t rely on color or shape alone.

Bring it by or give Cushing Family Pharmacy a call. We’ll be happy to check it for you.

Our bodies rely on connective tissues every day. Whether we’re walking, exercising, working, or simply getting out of bed in the morning.

Cartilage, tendons, ligaments, fascia, skin, and other connective tissues help provide structure and support throughout the body. One of their major building blocks is collagen, the most abundant structural protein in the body.

As we get older, the body’s natural collagen production changes. Physical activity, everyday wear and tear, nutrition, and other lifestyle factors can also influence the health of our joints and connective tissues.

That’s where targeted nutritional support may have a role.

Replenish Nutrition’s Collagen Pro Powder combines specialized ingredients designed to support healthy joints, mobility, and connective tissues as part of your everyday wellness routine.

Why Does Collagen Matter?

Collagen acts somewhat like a structural framework throughout the body. It’s found in cartilage, tendons, ligaments, skin, bone, and other connective tissues.

Your body naturally makes collagen, but collagen production and turnover change as you age. Maintaining good nutrition, including adequate protein and other essential nutrients, helps give your body the building blocks it needs to maintain healthy tissues.

Collagen supplements offer another way to incorporate specific collagen peptides and related nutrients into your routine.

But there’s something important to remember:

Not all collagen supplements are the same.

What Makes Collagen Pro Different?

Walk down the supplement aisle and you’ll find plenty of products labeled simply as “collagen.” Formulations can differ significantly in the types of collagen, amounts provided, additional ingredients, and intended uses.

Collagen Pro combines three specialized branded ingredients:

FORTIGEL®
Specialized collagen peptides developed for joint and cartilage nutrition. FORTIGEL® has been studied for its role in supporting joint health and function.

Tendaxion®
A collagen-based ingredient designed to provide nutritional support for tendons and other connective tissues involved in movement.

Mobilee®
A specialized ingredient that provides nutritional support for healthy joint function, lubrication, and mobility.

Together, these ingredients are designed to provide targeted nutritional support for healthy joints and connective tissues involved in everyday movement.

What Can Collagen Pro Support?

Collagen Pro is formulated to complement a healthy lifestyle by providing nutritional support in several areas.

Healthy Joints & Cartilage

Cartilage provides cushioning within our joints and plays an important role in comfortable movement. Collagen Pro contains specialized ingredients selected to support healthy cartilage and normal joint function.

Tendons & Ligaments

Tendons connect muscles to bones, while ligaments help connect bones and stabilize joints. These connective tissues experience stress during everything from exercise to normal daily activity.

Collagen Pro provides nutrients intended to support the maintenance of healthy connective tissues.

Joint Mobility & Lubrication

Healthy movement depends on more than bones and muscles. The structures within and around our joints work together to allow comfortable movement.

Ingredients in Collagen Pro are selected to provide nutritional support for healthy joint function, mobility, and lubrication.

Supporting Your Body Over Time

Collagen supplements aren’t intended to provide instant results or replace appropriate medical treatment. Instead, they’re designed to become part of a consistent nutritional routine that supports healthy joints and connective tissues over time.

That distinction is important.

Taking care of your joints can involve several pieces working together, including regular physical activity, appropriate strength training, balanced nutrition, maintaining a healthy weight, getting adequate rest, and addressing injuries or persistent pain when they occur.

A supplement such as Collagen Pro can be one part of that bigger picture.

Whether you’re interested in supporting an active lifestyle, thinking about healthy aging, or simply looking for additional nutritional support for your joints and connective tissues, Collagen Pro may be worth discussing with your pharmacist.

How to Use Collagen Pro

According to the product directions provided, mix 1 scoop (8 grams) into 8 ounces of water or your favorite beverage once daily, or use as recommended by your healthcare professional.

It can also be incorporated into certain foods or recipes, which can make adding collagen to your daily routine more convenient.

Always follow the directions on your current product label, as supplement formulations and recommendations can change.

Is Collagen Pro Right for Everyone?

Supplements aren’t one-size-fits-all.

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, have a medical condition, have food allergies or dietary restrictions, or take prescription medications, talk with your pharmacist or healthcare provider before starting a new supplement.

And if joint pain, swelling, weakness, or changes in mobility are persistent or getting worse, don’t rely on a supplement alone. Those symptoms may need to be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

At Cushing Family Pharmacy, we’re also happy to review your medications and supplements together. It’s a simple way to make sure you understand what you’re taking, why you’re taking it, and whether it makes sense for your individual health goals.

Support Your Body From the Inside Out

Healthy movement depends on healthy joints and connective tissues.

With specialized ingredients including FORTIGEL®, Tendaxion®, and Mobilee®, Replenish Nutrition’s Collagen Pro Powder is designed to provide targeted nutritional support for the structures involved in everyday movement.

Interested in Collagen Pro? Stop by Cushing Family Pharmacy and ask us about Replenish Nutrition’s Collagen Pro Powder.

Managing multiple medications every day can quickly become complicated. Between different medications, dosing times, refill schedules, and occasional prescription changes, there can be a lot to keep track of.

That’s where Cushing Family Pharmacy’s RapidPak medication packaging can help.

For just $15 per month, plus applicable prescription copays, RapidPak can organize up to 20 medications into convenient, easy-to-use packets based on when your medications are scheduled to be taken.

Instead of sorting medications into a weekly pill organizer or keeping track of multiple prescription bottles, RapidPak gives you a simpler way to organize your daily medication routine.

What Is RapidPak Medication Packaging?

RapidPak organizes eligible medications into individual packets according to the time of day they are scheduled to be taken.

Packets can be organized for:

Morning

Noon

Evening

Bedtime

Each packet is clearly labeled to help you know which medications are scheduled for that particular time of day.

RapidPak Service: $15 per month + applicable prescription copays

Up to 20 medications can be included in the service.

How Does RapidPak Work?

Getting started is simple.

1. Enroll in RapidPak
Talk with our pharmacy team to see if RapidPak is a good fit for your medication routine.

2. We organize your medications
Eligible medications are packaged into convenient packets according to the times they are scheduled to be taken.

3. We review your medications each month
About one week before your next RapidPak is due, a member of our pharmacy team will contact you or your caregiver to review your medications and ask about any recent changes.

4. We prepare your next RapidPak
We’ll update your upcoming packaging based on the current medication information available to us.

5. Pick it up or have it delivered
Once everything is prepared, we’ll contact you or your caregiver to let you know your RapidPak is ready for pickup or delivery.

Personalized Every Month

Medications can change, and your packaging needs to keep up.

That’s why our monthly review is such an important part of RapidPak.

About a week before your next package is due, we’ll call you or your caregiver and ask whether you’ve had any medication changes, including:

New medications

Discontinued medications

Dose changes

Changes to when a medication is taken

This review helps us identify medication changes and keep your upcoming packaging aligned with the information we have on file.

What If My Medication Changes During the Month?

Sometimes a doctor changes a medication after your RapidPak has already been prepared.

If that happens, call us.

Don’t try to guess which tablet should be removed from your packets or where a new medication should be added. Contact the Cushing Family Pharmacy team so we can review the medication change and tell you what to do next.

Keeping us informed about medication changes is an important part of keeping your medication list and future RapidPaks up to date.

Can Vitamins and Over-the-Counter Medications Be Included?

RapidPak isn’t necessarily limited to prescription medications.

Depending on the product and your medication regimen, we may also be able to include certain over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and dietary supplements in your packets.

Having more of your regularly scheduled medications and supplements organized together can make your daily routine even simpler.

Tell our pharmacy team about everything you take, including prescriptions, OTC products, vitamins, and supplements, so we can determine what can appropriately be included.

Who Might Benefit from RapidPak?

RapidPak may be a good option for:

People who take multiple medications every day

Patients managing several different dosing times

People who have difficulty keeping medications organized

Patients who don’t want to sort medications into weekly pill organizers

Caregivers helping organize a loved one’s medication routine

Anyone looking for a simpler way to manage regularly scheduled medications

Medication packaging doesn’t replace knowing what you’re taking or following your healthcare provider’s directions, but it can provide a more organized way to manage your daily routine.

Pickup or Delivery, We’ll Let You Know When It’s Ready

Once your RapidPak has been prepared, we’ll contact you or your caregiver to let you know everything is ready.

You can pick up your medications at Cushing Family Pharmacy or, when eligible, have them brought to you through our prescription delivery service.

Our goal is to make the entire process, from organizing your medications to getting them into your hands, as convenient as possible.

Take the Guesswork Out of Your Medication Routine

Managing multiple medications doesn’t have to mean juggling multiple bottles and complicated schedules.

With RapidPak medication packaging, you can have up to 20 medications organized into clearly labeled morning, noon, evening, and bedtime packets. Plus, our team checks in with you each month to review medication changes before preparing your next package.

Interested in RapidPak?

Stop by Cushing Family Pharmacy or give us a call. We’ll be happy to explain how the service works and help determine if it’s a good fit for you or someone you care for.

Your gut does more than just digest your food. The digestive system is home to trillions of microorganisms that make up what’s known as the gut microbiome, and maintaining a healthy balance of these microorganisms plays an important role in digestive health and overall wellness.

That’s one reason probiotics have become a frequent topic of conversation at Cushing Family Pharmacy.

One option we frequently recommend is Replenish Biotic, a probiotic supplement designed to support a healthy balance of beneficial microorganisms in the digestive system.

But before grabbing just any probiotic off the shelf, it helps to understand what probiotics actually do, and why they aren’t all the same.

What Are Probiotics?

Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when consumed in appropriate amounts, may provide health benefits.

You’ll commonly see probiotics marketed for digestive health, especially for people looking to support a healthy gut microbiome.

But there’s something important to understand:

“Probiotic” is a broad category.

Different products can contain different microorganisms, strains, and amounts. The evidence for a particular probiotic can depend on the specific strains it contains and why you’re taking it.

In other words, the bottle with the biggest number on the front isn’t automatically the best choice.

What About Probiotics with Antibiotics?

This is one of the most common reasons we talk to patients about probiotics.

Antibiotics are important medications used to treat bacterial infections, but while doing their job, they can also disrupt some of the bacteria normally living in your digestive tract.

Certain probiotics have been studied for their potential to help reduce the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea.

If you’re considering taking a probiotic during a course of antibiotics, ask your pharmacist about the best way to use it. Depending on the antibiotic and probiotic, we may recommend separating when you take them.

And remember: a probiotic doesn’t replace your antibiotic. Always take your antibiotic exactly as prescribed unless your healthcare provider tells you otherwise.

Can Probiotics Help with Digestion?

Certain probiotic strains have been studied for digestive concerns such as occasional bloating and some types of diarrhea.

The important word there is certain.

Results from one probiotic strain shouldn’t automatically be applied to every probiotic product. A probiotic that may be useful for one digestive concern isn’t necessarily the best choice for another.

That’s also true for conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Some probiotic strains and combinations have been studied in people with IBS, but results vary.

If you’re dealing with persistent abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, or another ongoing digestive problem, don’t simply continue trying different supplements indefinitely. Talk with your healthcare provider about what may be causing your symptoms.

Not Every Probiotic Is the Same

Walk down the supplement aisle and you’ll see probiotic bottles with all kinds of numbers, strains, and claims.

It can get confusing quickly.

When comparing probiotics, there are several things worth considering, including:

The specific microorganisms and strains included

The amount provided

Recommended use

Storage requirements

Expiration date

Why you’re considering a probiotic in the first place

More isn’t automatically better. What matters is choosing a product that makes sense for your individual needs.

That’s where your pharmacist can help.

Is a Probiotic Right for Everyone?

Probiotics are generally well tolerated by many healthy people, although some people may experience temporary gas, bloating, or digestive changes when beginning a new product.

However, probiotics aren’t necessarily appropriate for everyone.

People who have significantly weakened immune systems, serious illnesses, or complex medical conditions should talk with their healthcare professional before beginning a probiotic supplement.

If you’re unsure, ask us before you start one.

Why Replenish Biotic?

With so many probiotic products available, we understand why choosing one can feel overwhelming.

Replenish Biotic is one of the probiotic options available through Replenish Nutrition and one we carry for patients looking to support their digestive and gut health.

Rather than choosing a probiotic based solely on advertising or the largest number printed on the bottle, we encourage you to talk with us about why you’re considering one.

Are you taking an antibiotic? Are you looking for general digestive support? Are you experiencing a specific digestive concern?

Those questions can help us have a much more useful conversation about whether a probiotic, and Replenish Biotic specifically, makes sense for you.

Let Us Help You Choose

Choosing a probiotic doesn’t have to mean standing in the supplement aisle comparing bottles and wondering which one is actually right for you.

Whether you’re considering a probiotic during or after antibiotics, looking for digestive support, or simply have questions about gut health, talk with the team at Cushing Family Pharmacy.

We can review your medications, answer your questions, and help you determine whether adding a probiotic to your routine may be appropriate.

Medications are an important part of staying healthy, but proper storage is just as important as taking them correctly.

How and where you store your medications can help protect their quality, prevent accidental poisoning or misuse, and reduce medication mix-ups.

Fortunately, medication safety at home doesn’t have to be complicated. A few simple habits can make a big difference.

Keep Medications Up, Away & Out of Reach

One of the most important medication-safety rules is to keep medications up and away, out of the reach and sight of children and pets.

Store medications in a high cabinet, drawer, or closet where children and pets cannot easily see or reach them. For medications that could be misused, stolen, or accidentally taken by someone else, consider a locked cabinet, medication lockbox, or locking bag.

Remember that visitors, older children, and teenagers may also have access to medications in your home.

And don’t assume a child-resistant cap means childproof. Safety caps provide an additional layer of protection, but medications should still be stored securely and out of reach.

Choose the Right Storage Environment

Most medications should be stored at room temperature in a cool, dry place unless the medication label or your pharmacist gives you different instructions.

Heat, moisture, and light can affect certain medications.

Good storage locations may include a bedroom cabinet, closet shelf, or another secure area away from excessive heat and humidity.

What About the Bathroom Medicine Cabinet?

Despite its name, the bathroom medicine cabinet isn’t always the best place for medications. Heat and humidity from showers and baths may make the bathroom unsuitable for certain products.

You should also avoid storing medications near the kitchen stove, oven, sink, direct sunlight, or other sources of excessive heat and moisture.

Always follow the storage instructions for your specific medication.

What About Medications That Need Refrigeration?

Some medications require refrigeration, but don’t automatically put a medication in the refrigerator unless its storage instructions tell you to.

For medications that do require refrigeration, follow the label carefully and avoid storing them where they may accidentally freeze.

And accidents happen. Maybe you left a refrigerated medication on the counter overnight or accidentally left a prescription in the car.

Don’t automatically assume it’s ruined or that it’s still okay to use.

Call Cushing Family Pharmacy and let us know what happened. We can help determine the appropriate next step based on the specific medication and how it was stored.

Don’t Leave Medications in a Hot Car

Oklahoma temperatures can heat up a vehicle quickly.

Avoid leaving medications in your car for extended periods, particularly during very hot or cold weather. Extreme temperatures can affect certain medications and products.

If you’re concerned that a medication was exposed to excessive heat or cold, ask us before using it.

Keep Medications Properly Labeled and Organized

Keeping medications in their original labeled containers can make it easier to identify exactly what you’re taking and access important information such as the medication name, strength, directions, pharmacy information, and expiration date.

If you intentionally use a pill organizer, pharmacy-prepared adherence packaging, or another medication-management system, make sure you still have a reliable way to identify your medications and access their instructions.

Pill organizers can be a great tool, the goal is simply to have a system that works safely for you.

Keep Everyone’s Medications Separate

If multiple people or pets in your household take medications, keep them clearly separated.

Organizing each person’s medications in distinct locations or labeled containers can help prevent accidental mix-ups.

Pet medications should also be stored separately from human medications.

A few extra minutes of organization can help prevent potentially serious mistakes.

Clear Out Medications You No Longer Need

Take some time periodically to check for expired, discontinued, or unused medications.

Instead of allowing them to accumulate in a drawer or cabinet, use an appropriate medication take-back or disposal option when available. Disposal recommendations can vary depending on the medication, so ask Cushing Family Pharmacy about appropriate disposal options in your area.

Before disposing of empty prescription containers, it’s also a good idea to remove or obscure personal information on the label.

Need a Simpler Way to Organize Your Medications?

If you take several medications, keeping track of multiple bottles, refill dates, and dosing schedules can get complicated quickly.

That’s where we can help.

Talk with the team at Cushing Family Pharmacy about medication organization and packaging options that may work for you. We can help make managing your medications simpler and more convenient while helping you stay on track with your daily routine.

Medication Safety Starts at Home

Proper medication storage doesn’t have to be complicated. Remember these five simple tips:

Keep medications UP and AWAY.

Store them in a COOL, DRY place unless instructed otherwise.

Keep medications properly LABELED and ORGANIZED.

Keep different people’s medications SEPARATE.

Safely DISPOSE of medications you no longer need.

A little organization today can go a long way toward keeping your medications, and your family, safe.

If you have questions about how to store, organize, or dispose of a medication, ask the team at Cushing Family Pharmacy. We’re always happy to help.

September brings cooler weather, busier schedules, and the start of a new season. It’s also a great time to check in on some of the healthy habits that may have slipped during the summer.

You don’t need to completely overhaul your routine. A few simple, consistent choices can help support your health and well-being as we head into fall.

Preventive Care & Staying Healthy

Fall is a good time to focus on preventive care and prepare for the months ahead.

Review your vaccines. Seasonal and routine vaccine recommendations can depend on your age, health history, and what you’ve already received. Your pharmacist can help review your vaccination history and determine which vaccines may be appropriate for you.

Wash your hands often. Regular handwashing can help reduce the spread of germs. Wash your hands before eating, after being in public places, and whenever they’re visibly dirty. It’s also a good idea to avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

Keep drinking water. Cooler temperatures don’t mean hydration becomes less important. Continue drinking fluids throughout the day, especially when you’re active or spending time outdoors.

Give Your Medicine Cabinet a Fall Checkup

While you’re resetting other routines, take a few minutes to look through the medications and health supplies you keep at home.

Check expiration dates, make sure your regular prescriptions have refills remaining, and consider whether you have the basics you may need for common fall concerns like allergies, coughs, colds, fever, or minor aches and pains.

If you find an expired medication, don’t automatically throw it in the trash or flush it. Ask us about appropriate medication disposal options.

And before stocking up on over-the-counter medications, remember that not every product is appropriate for everyone. Some OTC medications can interact with prescriptions or may not be recommended with certain health conditions.

Not sure what to keep on hand? Ask us. We can help you choose products that make sense for you and your family.

Enjoy the Foods Fall Has to Offer

Fall brings plenty of nutritious, and delicious, foods to the table.

Apples, pears, pumpkin, squash, and sweet potatoes are all easy additions to meals and snacks. Many Fall fruits and vegetables also provide vitamins, minerals, and fiber as part of a balanced diet.

As temperatures cool, try incorporating hearty soups, broths, roasted vegetables, and other warm meals that make it easy to include nutrient-rich ingredients.

Healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated. Start by adding more whole foods and produce to meals you already enjoy.

Take Advantage of Cooler Weather

Staying active is important year-round, and September can bring some great opportunities to get outside.

You don’t need an intense workout routine to benefit from movement. A walk after dinner, yard work, playing outside with the kids, or another activity you enjoy all count.

The best kind of physical activity is often the kind you’ll actually continue doing.

Reset Your Sleep Routine

Busier fall schedules can make consistent sleep even more important.

Most adults should aim for around 7–9 hours of sleep each night. Going to bed and waking up at approximately the same time each day can help your body maintain a consistent routine.

As daylight hours begin to change, spending some time outside during the morning or daytime can also help support your body’s natural sleep-wake rhythm.

And don’t forget about your bedtime routine. Reducing screen time before bed, keeping your bedroom comfortable, and giving yourself time to wind down can all help set the stage for better sleep.

Make Time for Your Mental Well-Being

As schedules get busier and daylight begins to change, remember to make time for your mental well-being, too.

Stay connected with friends, family, and your community. Make time for conversations, hobbies, activities, or simply being around the people who help you feel your best.

Taking care of your health isn’t just about what you eat or how much you exercise. Your emotional well-being matters, too.

If you’ve ever heard someone mention CoQ10 (short for Coenzyme Q10) and wondered what it does, you’re not alone. CoQ10 is one of the most commonly recommended supplements because it plays an important role in helping your body produce energy while also acting as a powerful natural antioxidant.

In fact, every cell in your body relies on CoQ10 to produce energy, making it one of the body’s most important naturally occurring compounds. Although your body naturally produces CoQ10, production tends to decrease as we age. Certain medications, especially cholesterol-lowering statins, can also reduce CoQ10 levels. That’s why many people choose to take a CoQ10 supplement to help support their overall health.

How Can CoQ10 Help?

Supports Heart Health

Your heart works around the clock and has one of the highest energy demands of any organ in your body. CoQ10 helps your cells produce the energy your heart needs to function properly, making it a popular supplement for supporting healthy cardiovascular health.

Many people include CoQ10 as part of an overall heart-healthy lifestyle that also includes regular exercise, a balanced diet, and following their healthcare provider’s recommendations.

May Help with Statin-Related Muscle Aches

Statin medications are highly effective at lowering cholesterol and reducing the risk of heart disease. However, some people experience muscle soreness, fatigue, or discomfort while taking them.

Because statins can lower the body’s natural CoQ10 levels, supplementing with CoQ10 may help reduce these muscle-related side effects for some individuals. If you’re taking a statin and experiencing muscle aches, talk with your healthcare provider or pharmacist to see if CoQ10 may be appropriate for you.

May Help Reduce Migraine Frequency

If you struggle with recurring migraines, CoQ10 may offer another potential benefit.

Some research suggests that regular CoQ10 supplementation may help reduce how often migraines occur by supporting healthy energy production within brain cells. While it isn’t a cure for migraines, many people use it as part of their overall migraine prevention plan under the guidance of their healthcare provider.

More Than Energy: Antioxidant Protection

In addition to helping your body produce energy, CoQ10 also functions as a powerful antioxidant.

Antioxidants help protect your cells from oxidative stress, which occurs naturally during everyday metabolism and can also be influenced by factors such as aging, pollution, and other environmental exposures.

By helping defend cells from oxidative damage, CoQ10 supports overall cellular health throughout the body.

Can You Get CoQ10 from Food?

Yes, but usually only in small amounts.

Foods that naturally contain CoQ10 include:

Beef

Chicken

Fatty fish

Nuts

Seeds

While these foods contribute to your daily intake, they generally don’t provide enough CoQ10 to significantly increase the body’s levels. For individuals looking for additional support, a high-quality supplement may be beneficial.

Is CoQ10 Right for You?

Like any supplement, CoQ10 isn’t one-size-fits-all.

It can interact with certain medications, so it’s always a good idea to talk with your pharmacist or healthcare provider before starting it. We’ll be happy to review your medications, discuss your health goals, and help determine whether CoQ10 is a good option for you.

How Long Does It Take for CoQ10 to Work?

Many people begin noticing potential benefits after several weeks of consistent daily use, although individual results can vary depending on why they’re taking CoQ10 and their overall health.

Like many nutritional supplements, consistency is important. Taking it regularly gives your body the best opportunity to maintain healthy CoQ10 levels.

Ask Us About Replenish CoQ10
